Burning candle for our candle care guide article with tips and tricks to get the best burn

Overview

Our scented candles have been handmade with care to provide you with hours and hours of strong-smelling fragrance. We truly care about the experience you receive from burning our candles, which is why we've put our experience to use by expertly crafting the following candle care tips. Enjoy!

Burning your candle

The first burn is the most important as it sets the stage for how your candle performs.

To obtain the best results, ensure the pool of melted wax reaches the edges of your glass candle container in order to avoid ‘tunnelling’, which is a build-up of wax around the vessel’s side which goes to waste.

You should burn your candle in a well-ventilated room where drafts can be avoided. This will help prevent rapid or uneven burning.

We would not recommend burning your candle for any more than 4 hours at a time and do not recommend burning your candle all the way down, instead, we suggest you leave 1 cm of wax in the bottom of the vessel.

Caring for your wick

‍Prior to re-lighting your candle, aim to trim your wick so the exposed section measures approximately 5 mm to 1 cm in height as a longer wick will result in a bigger burn.

Sticking to these candle guidelines will ensure a safe and clean burn. For best results, wick-trimming tools can be used, or you can simply pinch away the loose bits with your fingers.

Keep the wax pool free of wick trimmings, matches, and debris at all times as these can act as a second wick, causing your candle to burn faster.

Storing your candle

When not in use, store your candle in a cool and dry place and cover it with the supplied lid. All self(ish) company candles are supplied with a re-usable bamboo lid. This is essential to protect your candle from dust and help lock in fragrance to be released once burned again.

Storing candles for too long can affect the scent produced, so try to burn your candle in a reasonable time to make the most of its amazing scent.

Considerations

‍Please be mindful that self (ish) company candles are made from natural soy wax. Due to its natural properties, soy wax may have slight cosmetic imperfections in between burns.

This in no way impacts the performance or the safety of the candle. In fact, because Soy Wax has a lower melting point than Parrafin Wax, you'll reap the benefits of a candle that provides a long-lasting clean burn, which is better for your health as it won't release nasty chemicals into the enviroment.

Candles will burn for a varying amount of time depending on the wax used, environment, care given, and the individual scent in use. Burn times displayed on product pages are approximate, though ours have been achieved in testing.

Summary

Following proper candle care instructions will maximise your chances of  experiencing the cleanest and longest burn possible. However, a good tradesman can blame their tools in this regard.

Buying mass produced, low quality parrafin candles will likely result in underwhelming results which can be dangerous. That's why we'd always recommend buying high quality hand-crafted soy candles from a reputable source.
